On Dong-Eun Medical Museum at Yonsei University College of Medicine
ÀÌ°æ·Ï/Kyung-Lock Lee
Abstract
Dong-Eun Medical Museum at Yonsei University College of Medicine is a specialized museum for the
history of Korean medicine. The museum was named after the pseudonym of the donator Choong-Sik
KIm who had made a donation of immense farmland in 1948 for the Severance Medical College, the
forerunner of Yonsei University College of Medicine. The museum opened in 1976 at the Medical Library
of Yonsei University and then temporarily installed at the Yonsei University Museum before the present
museum was prepared. Yonsei University College of Medicine, the birth place of modern Korean medicine,
has been taking much efforts to preserve its history and to collect medical books, instruments and
documents of historical importance. The museum laid a special emphasis upon the history of the
introduction of Western medicine into Korea and we are much delighted to exhibit our rare and precious
collections concerning the subject. The collection includes the first annual report of Je-Chung-Won(the
first Western hospital in Korea) prepared by H. N. Allen who was the first missionary doctor sent to
Korea, early Western medical texts published during 1900s and medical instruments. Many descendents of
medical missionaries and alumni of Yonsei University College of Medicine made a considerable
contribution to our collections. We express our deep gratitude for their generous donations. In addition, the
museum possesses a good number of articles concerning the Korean traditional medicine and a part of the
collection is also on display. Dong-Eun Medical Museum will continue to increase its collections and hope
to become an institute to contribute to the study of history of Korean medicine.
